Cystinuria Disease Test

Cystinuria is an inherited autosomal recessive disorder and is characterized by the formation of cystine stones in the kidney, ureter, and bladder.

In this disorder, the kidneys do not adequately reabsorb certain amino acids during the filtering process, thus resulting in excess excretion of these amino acids. The amino acids may precipitate and form crystals or stones in the kidneys, ureters, or bladder.

DDC Veterinary is offering DNA Cystinuria Testing for Newfoundland and Labrador Breeders worldwide.

There are 3 possible genotypes reported:

  • CLEAR (those having 2 copies of the normal allele and are normal).
  • CARRIER (those having 1 copy of the normal allele and 1 copy of the mutation but are not at risk for developing stones)
  • AFFECTED (those having 2 copies of the mutation and are at risk for developing stones.)
