Canine DNA Testing for Natural Bobtail

DDC Veterinary offers DNA testing for Natural Bobtail among several dog breeds. By identifying the genotypes of phenotypically short-tailed dogs, clients can accurately determine whether the animal is a Natural Bobtail (genetically short-tailed) or has been artificially docked.

Breeders can use DNA testing as a tool to more effectively manage mating patterns and make more informed selection decisions. Breeds we are currently able to test include but not limited to:

  • Australian Shepherd
  • Austrian Pinscher
  • Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog
  • Bourbonnais Pointer
  • Brazilian Terrier
  • Brittany Spaniel
  • Catahoula
  • Croatian Sheepdog
  • Danish/ Swedish Farmdog
  • Jack Russell Terrier
  • Karelian Bear Dog
  • Mudi
  • Pembroke Welsh Corgi
  • Polish Lowland Sheepdog
  • Pyrenean Shepherd
  • Savoy Sheepdog
  • Schipperke
  • Spanish Waterdog
  • Swedish Vallhund

Natural Bobtail (DNA marker tested – T gene mutation C189G) Natural Bobtail is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Dogs that have 2 normal copies of gene will have a long tail (or, if they have a short tail, then they have been artificially docked). Those dogs that have 1 normal copy and 1 copy of the C189G mutation (heterozygotes) are a genetically short-tailed animal (Natural Bobtail). Receiving 2 copies of the C189G mutation is considered to be lethal.
